How To Sell Power to The Grid in Cape Town

The City of Cape Town has just announced that they will pay you to sell excess power back to the grid!

The National Treasury has given Cape Town exemption to pay businesses and residents directly for selling their excess power back to the City!

How much?

The National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) has approved a rate of 79c per kilowatt-hour (c/kWh) for this financial year for the City to pay power sellers. The City also adds a 25c/kWh incentive tariff on top of this.

Hill-Lewis, the Mayor of Cape Town, has said that he is looking to buy electricity from as many City-supplied customers as possible. He is looking at this system to be an END to load shedding in time.

Hill-Lewis Quote: "Payments to commercial customers will be possible before June, and within the year for any Capetonian with the necessary City-approved generation capacity. If you’re thinking of investing in a solar system, it just got more attractive,”

How You Can Sell Power:

If you're living in Cape Town and generate power, you may be able to sell any excess energy back to the grid. This process, known as net metering, allows homeowners with solar systems to offset their energy costs by sending unused electricity back to the grid.

Here's how it works: When your system generates more energy than you need, the excess is sent back to the grid, which will in turn result in you being paid for every kWh you send to the grid!
